Your life should improve every single year.

Every year I strive to make the upcoming year better than the last one. However, I know that 2021 has been a difficult year for a lot of people. We all hoped that the end of the pandemic was in sight. Unfortunately, it has continued to impact our lives in a multitude of ways.

As you look ahead to 2022, I want to encourage you to look for possibilities and new opportunities. Amidst the chaos, there is always hope. Oftentimes, the most challenging moments of life force us to grow in the most powerful ways.

The darkest moments of my life have led me to the place where I am today. I would have never discovered self-development had I not experienced rock bottom. Hitting rock bottom, whether it's a failed business, a failed relationship, or a major illness, is when we learn life's greatest and most important lessons to build our success.

I believe that challenges in life are gifts. They are given to us for the sole purpose of building our resilience. Through this process, we are forced to grow and become more. I want to guide you through a process that I work through every year. The purpose of this process is to extract the good so that you can finish this year strong.

Keep in mind that you can engage in this self-reflection process on a weekly or monthly basis as well. On that note, let's dive in!

1. Reflect on this year

I'm not a big fan of dwelling on the past because it's over. Far too often people define who they are based on the decisions that they made in the past. You can't change what happened to you, but you can choose to not let the past control your life.

The best way to do this is by learning from your past and extracting the lessons. There is a lesson embedded within every experience. If you learn what those lessons are and apply them to your life, you'll never make the same mistake twice. I encourage you to reflect upon the following questions:

What were the major wins or breakthroughs that you had over the last 12 months?

By default, most of us are conditioned to look for problems. Our brains like to fixate on bad things, otherwise known as the negativity bias. We have a propensity to give more attention to things that go wrong than to things that go right.

Hence why it's so important to train your mind to look for the good. I'm a big fan of reflecting upon the magic moments of life. The more that you recall and relive moments like these, the more that you will strengthen those feel-good memories in your psyche.

What were the challenges that you faced this year?

Most people spend 90% of their time focused on their problems and only 5% of their time focused on solutions. Problems don't magically go away on their own.

You have to be resourceful and look for solutions.

When you continuously focus on problems, you will attract more of them into your life. However, you do want to reflect upon the challenges you've faced and find ways to overcome them so that they don't happen again. If you can find the root cause of your problems, you will feel empowered to change your current situation.

What were the valuable lessons that you learned this year?

Life lessons are invaluable pieces of wisdom or knowledge that you embrace to improve your life. In my experience, the most valuable lessons are rooted in pain and hardship. Pain is a gift in that it forces you to learn something new about yourself.

As Bob Marley once said, “You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice.”

2. Reflect upon your future

Before I set goals for the New Year I reflect upon my vision. I believe that the goals that we set are the milestones that lead us to the ultimate vision that we have for our life. Your vision is a moving target. It's always expanding and growing.

You always need a compelling future, something that you are excited and passionate to move towards. What is your vision? Who do you want to become? Why is it important that you achieve this vision?

Step into your vision and visualize what it looks like. Think big and don't hold back. Nothing in this life is unattainable. Whatever you can conceive, you can achieve.

When you ask young kids what they want to be when they grow up they have no problem telling you that they want to be an astronaut, the president, or a race car driver. When you're a kid, anything feels possible. We have to take that same approach in adulthood.

Reflect upon the most important areas of your life that you want to focus on in 2022

Every year you want to be making progress in each area of your life. However, you want to get clear on 1-2 areas of your life that you have the desire to master in the New Year. I'm a big fan of focus. You can manage multiple areas of life at one time.

However, there will be times when specific areas of your life will need more attention than others. By committing to mastering 1-2 areas of your life in 2022, how will other areas of your life benefit as well?

As an example, if you decide to focus on mastering your physical health, in turn, your mental and emotional health will improve as well. When you commit to raising your standards, the Universe will present you with endless opportunities. Reflect upon what is most important to you as you shift into this next stage of your life.

Reflect upon the goals that you are going to set for each area of your life

I attribute all of the success that I've achieved in my life to goal-setting. When I'm setting goals, I follow the SMART acronym for setting goals. Setting SMART goals helps you clarify your ideas, focus your efforts, and increase your chances of achieving what you want in life.

You want each of your goals to be:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

Decide on which goals are going to allow you to make progress in each area of your life. Set them, commit to them, and remind yourself of them regularly. Of the goals that you set, you want to prioritize which ones are most important.

When you set your goals, ask yourself, “What obstacles may get in the way of achieving this goal?” Asking yourself this question will empower you to brainstorm solutions for overcoming these obstacles if need be.

The new year is the perfect time to set new goals and get things started on the right foot. Take advantage!

This is my 2022 planning process for how to get the most out of your year.

Every year is a new opportunity to be whoever you want to be. Endless opportunities are waiting for you. The question is… will you take advantage of them? Commit to making 2022 your best year yet.

In the words of Bradley Whitford, “Infuse your life with action. Don’t wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your future.”
